(Not) on Target – Gilt Groupe misses the mark

This morning at 9am PST Gilt Groupe unleashed three Target collaborations available for pre-sale before they hit Target stores: Mulberry (accessories), Tucker by Gaby Basora (clothing), and John Derian (home goods) for Target.

I was super excited about this and put up a public service announcement on my Facebook page.

In theory, this is a great idea. Target collaborations often sell out fast, and Gilt’s user base are exactly the type of people who snap up the Target collaborations as soon as they’re released. Gilt is a leader in online flash sales, so it makes sense that they’d be the first to experiment with this.

In practice… this sale was totally underwhelming. The Tucker clothing options were BOOOOOORING and looked like they might not fit that well. The Mulberry bags were equally an uninspired snooze. Some of the John Derian stuff was cute, but I’m not really into home goods. Here are some snapshots from the sale:

Does anything jump out at you? Because nothing jumped out at me. I am all for Target designer collaborations, and I think it’s great that Gilt is pushing the envelope with respect to bringing fashionistas deals of different kinds, but this collaboration definitely missed the mark.

i like the fleece jumpsuit and the floral printed woven dress, but i wouldn’t buy them on gilt. i would rather get them at target. and sometimes that stuff randomly goes on sale/clearance too which is part of the joy for me in shopping at le target. but the bags are a snooze.

there were a couple tucker pieces I’ve liked, but I’ve learned with past Target collaborations that you really need to try things on in store. Sizing (and fabrication) seems to be all over the board. I was most disappointed with the Mulberry collection. Only 4 bags and they look very cheap IMO. Mulberry has so many great bag styles…I wanted to see more creativity in this collection.

Yeah, I didn’t see anything I loved too much, the Mulberry bags the most, but then again I have too many purses already and will wait to see the collection in stores.

I liked the mini satchel. I think it will be a hot item this year.

100% agreed: boring, uninspired high street. Ugh!
