Project Runway recap: FLOTUS Then and Now

I know I’m super behind on these recaps, and it’s not going to get any better for the time being because I’m about to go off the grid for 9 days. So I apologize. But I will be all caught up before the finale, I promise.

This week Heidi announces that the designers are “looking to the past to secure their future.” Whatever that means. Gretchen just knows that she doesn’t want to make a corset. As it turns out, the designers must make American sportswear, with the first fashionable first lady Jackie Kennedy as their muse. But honestly, whenever they made reference to Jackie-O, I was thinking MObama.

The producers must have heard my plea from last week, because they brought Gretchen back! She’s back to giving other designers decisive advice on their looks, and confessing her concern directly to the camera. I’m sure Gretchen never left, the producers are just now returning her to us.

There’s also a twist! Those designer are so sick and tired of challenge twists, and I think if their mentor was anyone less awesome than Tim Gunn they might revolt. The designers must also design a piece of outerwear, which sucks for Valerie because her first piece already featured outerwear. On to the clothes!

Andy; I can’t see MObama wearing this, thus I can’t see Jackie-O wearing it either. It’s cool and modern and so was Jackie Kennedy in her time, but as Tim Gunn wisely counseled Andy – the first lady would not have camel toe!

Valerie; in the bottom three, the judges thought this was too basic, but I actually liked the outer vest. Nina called Valerie out on her repeated use of pleating and zippers. In the end, Heidi called it “boring, inexpensive, badly-executed mall-wear.” Oh snap!

April; she just likes to make poufy black things.

Mondo; I <3 Mondo, and this time so do the judges! I love the way he mixed prints and still incorporated bold color. Everything about this outfit is fresh and bold, and I’m so happy for Mondo that he won.

Christopher; aside from the roadkill that he draped across his model’s neck (just kidding, it’s suede), the dress is very pretty.

Michael C; a pretty dress, but it seems too low-key and inconsequential for a fashion-forward first lady.

Gretchen; she certainly didn’t make a corset. I also think she needs to step away from the camel. Can you see either of the first ladies wearing this? I can’t. Well, at best MObama might wear it while gardening, or chilling on Air Force One.

Ivy; I actually like something that she did, and the judges put her in the top three. It’s crisp, clean and contemporary.

Michael D; the loser! This outfit looks like something for a first daughter, not a first lady. I like the idea of the sheer over layer of his tank, but again, it’s too young for FLOTUS (either of them). Poor Michael, he seemed so sweet I hate to see him go.

What did you think of this week’s designs? What do you think Jackie Kennedy would wear if she were the First Lady today? Do you think the right designer went home? When will they give Ivy the boot? Feel free to discuss in the comments.
