It’s not unusual for me to become completely obsessed with a print. Usually it’s a floral. Never has it been a plaid! For some reason, a few months ago, I could not let go of the idea of buffalo check plaid. I’m not really a plaid girl. While I do like a fun red tartan, American plaids make me think of being in the woods with an axe and cutting down trees. Lumberjacks. Maybe even maple syrup? So I was very surprised when I found myself trying to track down the perfect piece in buffalo check plaid. I don’t even know where the inspiration came from! I didn’t necessarily want to get a button-up shirt because, while the obvious choice, I don’t wear button-ups that often. I started with a scarf from Madewell. It’s not on the website anymore, but it featured three different red plaids, one of which was a buffalo check. It didn’t satisfy my itch.

While in San Francisco last month, I was bopping around the Mission (my old ‘hood), waiting for a friend to get off work, when I spotted it in the back of a vintage store I hadn’t seen before. I couldn’t believe it. It seemed perfect. Shaped like a shirt, but roomy enough to be a jacket; 100% wool so I knew it would be warm. And bonus: it still had the label on it – Woolrich! I would like to say that I bought it promptly, but I didn’t. I considered going back the next day for it. But when somebody else came into the store and my first thought was, ‘b**** better not steal my jacket’, I knew I had to buy it. And guess what? I wore it nearly every day I was in SF, and I’ve worn it about twice a week since!

Oh, and a note about the above outfit: I thought it was a hoot! A woodsy jacket and duck boots paired with a (butterfly) camouflage (Alexander McQueen) dress! I know most people didn’t get the joke. But I did. And that’s what matters.
