You know how sometimes when you drop off your dry cleaning, you end up buying a new bag? It happens! A couple of weekends ago I was meandering around the neighborhood (after an errand at the dry cleaners) when I discovered this gem, Basil Racuk. I had neither my camera nor my wallet on hand; but after spending a few minutes in the store I ran home to grab both.

Both Basil and his friend and associate Susie were at the shop, cutting up leather trim for the small pouches. There is, in fact, an entire workshop in the basement! Looking at these beautiful, handmade bags was actually a bit mesmerizing – and I’ve never used that term to describe bag shopping. There is such a range of styles, and each one hand crafted from beautiful leather. I pretty much had to look at and touch every single bag in the store. Plus, I had great time chatting with Basil and Susie and learning about the bags. I wanted a bag, regardless, but it’s a nice bonus to know that a wonderful person made it with love. So which bag did I end up with? 5th from top, black deerkskin with leather trim. 3rd from top was a close second. If I’m not careful I might end up with it on my next dry cleaning run!

You can visit Basil Racuk at 3458-A 18th Street (at Lexington), or shop online.
