REAL TALK
“I didn’t think it would take me this long to find a job.” – Maggie
I find myself uttering this sentence several times a week. Maggie and I aren’t exactly in the same position – she has a trust fund and has been interning for free at an art gallery for 2 years; my route to (f)unemployment was more circuitous, but nonetheless I immediately have empathy for anyone who sighs these words. And like my mother, her mom offers for Maggie to just come home. But Maggie recognizes that if she wants to work in the art world, New York is where she needs to be. Likewise, as someone whose career is heading towards the fashion and technology/digital worlds, moving back to North Carolina doesn’t make sense. But my mom suggests it anyway.
Angela Shows Her Photography
My other favorite storyline was Angela putting on her photography show. Normally in other reality/Bravo series, when a cast member organizes an event you mainly see them calling their cast mates to invite them, maybe going to the venue ahead of time to chit-chat with the manager, then showing up day of to berate the crew that’s actually putting it together. Angela, on the other hand, didn’t just call people to invite them, she went from Brooklyn to a party on the Upper East Side (the rest of her Brooklyn crew flaked) to network and extend the invitation in person as well. That’s smart, and necessary. We also saw her getting prints of her photos, putting them up, and taking them down. And that’s what happens when you’re young and want to make something happen – you really have to do it all yourself and learn as you go.
If you like Angela’s expertly colorblocked look, try building a similar outfit with some of the piece below. Everything is available on Piperlime!
Oh, and I have to say something about all the cracked iPhones. I saw someone on Twitter complaining about this, but it’s REAL! Who among us doesn’t have at least a small crack in their phone, or know someone who does? Or how many people have accidentally dropped their phones in the toilet? I’ve thankfully never done that, but my phone has a small crack. And I spilled tomato soup on it a while back. Suffice to say, if suddenly all the girls had brand new shiny iPhones, I would be suspicious.
