Awards shows may group actresses into the same categories, but on the red carpet each of these ladies was in a league of her own.
Best Evolution of a Teen Pop Star
Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier. She’s come a long way from “Candy”.
Least Evil As Compared Your Film’s Character, Especially As Portrayed in the Previews
Mila Kunis in Elie Saab. Doesn’t she look so sweet and non-threatening? Totally unlike the Black Swan Previews (which were totally misleading about her actual character).
Hottest Potential Eye-Sore
Penelope Cruz in L’Wren Scott. I’m sure this gown looked iffy on the hanger; props to Penelope Cruz for being fearless and making it work!
Best Viewed from the Side
Anne Hathaway in Valentino. From the front this gown was underwhelming; from the side, a knock-out.
Most Golden
Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein. She’s outshining the golden statue behind her.
Dress Best Defined by the Actress’ Name
Busy Phillips. What with the shirred bodice, cascade of ruffles, and a fishtail skirt with tulle peeking out at the bottom, it’s a very busy gown.
Best deviation from Previous Looks
Halle Berry in Marchesa. Halle Berry’s signature is simple, tight gowns that show off her curves and muscles. She still has the form-fitting bodice, but it was nice to see her in something with sparkle and froth.
Most Unique
Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Couture. The front vaguely reminds me of an upholstered chair, but not in a bad way.
Best Understated Glamour
Michelle Williams in Chanel. Basic shape, but the bead work makes it a stunner.
Most Statuesque
Annette Bening in Ermenegildo Zegna. She looks spectacular in this art-deco inspired gown.
Best All-Around
Hilary Swank in Gucci Premiere. Sparkly gold bodice and ombre feathered train perfection.
Which dresses were your favorites? Which actresses do you think were right on, or totally off base? And am I the only one who expected Mila Kunis’ character in Black Swan to be way more of an antagonist than she actually was? Weigh in – in the comments!
