The Final Unfashionable Frontier

Gym clothes.

Remember when people wore oversize T-shirts and -GASP- tapered sweat pants to work out? And before yoga was popular and it got its own category of clothing? There used to be a time when nobody cared about looking good while working out.

I used to revel in the fact that you could acceptably look crappy at the gym. I felt more serious  in a ratty t-shirt than a cute outfit. But now I go to a fancier gym and my work-outs have gotten more hardcore, so I’m ready for an upgrade.

Maybe this will even inspire me to kick it up a notch! It worked for Kelly Osbourne – who counts looking cute as a major motivator.

Do you wear specialty exercise gear? Please send me your recommendations!

*Gym clothes are actually only the penultimate frontier; my hiking outfits are abysmal. Someday, I will be decked out in Patagonia/North Face/Columbia gear. Someday.

I kind of thought of Lululemon was some sort of frighteningly pervasive (and frighteningly expensive) cult for a very long time…and then I tried on their clothes and understood. I invested in some workout pants and sports bras from them a few months ago, and wow, I finally started working out regularly! It’s crazy, but I felt so much better about myself in tailored, flattering (and of course also functional) gym clothes than in the rags I had been wearing before, it motivated me to go in much more often 🙂

I don’t go to the gym enough to warrant buying special clothes for it! Right now, I can justify keeping my cute logo tees, even if they don’t fit properly anymore, because “oh I can just wear them to the gym”. I mostly do yoga and swimming and for yoga tend to be very plain – black leggings, black crop top, black spaghetti tank. A few years ago, before I’d ever stepped into a gym, I decided to get sporty and went and bought a bunch of gym stuff, but again it was all black. I have a personal training induction this week, so maybe I’ll see how that goes and treat myself to some more flattering workout gear 😉

But then when would I ever wear my free t-shirts (Late Ride, SASA, Avanti Polar Lipids, etc.), if not to the gym?

Elizabeth I totally know what you mean! I actually wear ratty tank-tops and not ratty t-shirts to the gym, but while recently looking for a box full of Chicago sweaters and long underwear I uncovered my SASA, MAB, LATE Ride, and other nostalgic t-shirts. But I have nowhere to wear them.

The Lululemon Wunder Under crop pants have changed my life. They make your legs look amazing: http://shop.lululemon.com/Wunder_Under_Crop/pd/c/570/np/570/p/1573.html

  5. […] the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion? I blogged about this recently, but still don’t have an answer. I would like to look better when I work […]
