Project Runway recap: Something old becomes something new

… old dresses are borrowed (kind of), and designers in the bottom three feel blue.

This is the token “make clothes for real people” challenge, but it was surprisingly devoid of designers bitching about having to work with real bodies. Michael D.’s attitude was downright refreshing! Referring to her as “wickedly curvaceous,” he lauded his model’s curves instead of putting them down. To that I say, Bravo!

The opening shots show everyone talking more trash about Michael C. They even do it in the workroom. How brazen! And Valerie offers some insight on last week’s Gretchen debacle saying she has “[a strong personality and] the propensity to fall into the role of leadership without realizing it.” I totally agree. In fact, I said as much last week.

In addition to talking trash about Michael C., everybody was hating on the bridesmaid dresses, and it just felt right. I don’t even hate my bridesmaid dress, but I enjoy talking trash about them in general. Christopher Collins wonders why “every bride wants her bridesmaids to look so bad” and Tim Gunn blames the bridesmaid dress industry. Although to be fair, the industry caters to brides, who seem to want their best female friends to look their worst, so it’s kind of a vicious circle.

Best line: This is looking as far away from fashion as one can get, it’s looking like clothes – Tim Gunn to Valerie.

On to the outfits!

Casanova; Excellent color combination. They showed a close-up of the teal pants and a collective “whoa” arose from the peanut gallery.*

Mondo; excellent use of color-blocking.

Valerie; color-blocking FAIL. She is in the bottom three, and needs to get her head back in the game.

Michael D; in the bottom three, he admitted to using upholstery fabric in order to gain more yardage and the judges called him out on the cheap fabric. At best it looks like the skirt is covered in tulle (instead of netting), but I would rather the entire dress be covered in lace.

Michael C; the winner! Nina says this looks expensive which is a BIG DEAL for her. In the judges’ discussion Heidi reminds the others how on the previous runway everybody was throwing Michael C under the bus and saying he couldn’t sew. The judges had a WTF moment over that, which I appreciated.

Christopher Collins; beautiful dress, yet feels unremarkable.

Ivy; when are the judges going to call her out for making boring clothing?

Gretchen; I appreciate that she turned a bridesmaid dress into streetwear, but that top looks dirty. And as Catie said, like if you cut a banana down the middle; however Annie and Kim were getting more of a napkin vibe from the top.

Peach; oy. Michael Kors is on fire for this one: “she’s at the church bring-a-pot dinner.” (I think he means potluck) “Saying something is comfortable is like saying something’s washable.” “[She has a] holly hobby top [with] avocado dinner napkins tucked in at her hips.” Peach, not surprisingly, was sent home.

I absolutely think the right person went home this week. I hope Valerie and Michael D. step it up so they don’t get Auf’d. I’d really like to see Ivy go. Who was your favorite designer this week? Do you think the right person went home?

*The peanut gallery was comprised of myself, Catie of Cuffington, Annie of Poetic and Chic, and Kim of J’Adore Couture. What a fun group to watch with!

Despite the “horrible vertical bow” I totally would wear it again 🙂
