Project Runway recap: Double Play

This week’s challenge came with a caliber of reward not usually seen until a much later episode: the winner will have their look featured on a billboard in NYC. Big deal! Then, a few hours before sewing curfew Tim announces that not only will they have the runway show, the designers also get a photo shoot. This is unprecedented in Project Runway history – I don’t believe the designers have ever had a surprise that didn’t require them to make a second piece. Jason bitches and moans about it, but dude, this is GOOD for you! You get two chances to make your outfit look good, and it doesn’t require any extra sewing on your part. In the end, Heidi made good on her threats and served up a double play in elimination.

We find out that Jason is the token straight guy AND looks a lot cuter without that silly bowler hat. He is quite the complainer however, which is unattractive. Nobody wants to root for a person with a chip on their shoulder.

As my roommate astutely observed Nicholas looks stuck in the 90s (frosted hair tips?!). Sugar Ray called – he wants his look back.

So I take these notes while watching the show, and after A.J. flipped out at Casanova I predicted that A.J. would crumble under pressure and cry/flip out at least once in the season. As it turns out, he cried by the end of the episode.

Favorite line: “It’s not about fashion design, it’s about the public torture of fashion designers.” – Sara (starting to understand what it’s all about)
Vocab watch: “Blind Trust” – what Tim Gunn unprecedentedly offers to Mondo in the work room. This is a Tim Gunn first!

Favorite outfits:

Chris; I love this top, although I think it would look better over cigarette pants and with edgier heels; not ladylike pumps.

Valerie; her dress is fun, youthful, and sporty. ♥

Kristen; she’s good at creating dramatic pieces, and her specialty seems to be bunching up fabric. I would totally wear that top over leggings.

Winner: Gretchen (again)

When I first saw her jumpsuit I thought it was boring and uninspired, but at least it filled up the billboard well.

Double Elimination: Jason + Nicholas.

My roommate observed about Jason’s model: “his model doesn’t look skinny in this, maybe she’s not skinny at all.” This was an astute observation, and I’m surprised the judges weren’t shown commenting on this. Maybe Lifetime won’t let them comment on body size? But Joanna Coles still delivered a zinger asking “how can he remotely think that was sexy? Has he ever spoken to a woman?”

The judges thought Nicholas did too much, and nothing well. I just thought this looked a little too much “Little Red Riding Hood”.

When Jason was out he rushed through his good-byes (ever with that chip on his shoulder) and didn’t wait to speak to Tim Gunn. Nicolas cried like a baby. If you combine their reactions it’s almost like a normal person.

What were your favorite pieces this week? Did both Jason and Nicholas deserve to go home?

I thought Valerie had it for sure this week – her’s was definitely my favourite. I wasn’t too disappointed with the winner though, I thought that Gretchen’s look was great though it reminded me of all the one-pieces Tyra was wearing on last season’s Top Model. The decision to get rid of Jason was definitely a good one. His dress looked like someone’s home ec project, and yes he was full of excuses about time, etc but at the very least he should still be competent regarding basic construction. Choosing a shiny fabric with such a time limit was folly too, those fabrics are unforgiving and show every pull. As for Nicholas, I think he deserved a second chance. While bizarre, his outfit looked sewn to be constructed better (except perhaps the skirt), had more design to it (what the hell was that infinity dress of Jason’s? Just a plain boring dress with a weird flap on the front) and I liked the shirt from the front at least. Don’t remember Nicholas from last week, was he in the bottom then too?

I thought Valerie had it too! Jason kind of shot himself in the foot by choosing a photo of the dress were there was clearly a hole in his “infinity” design, so it was obvious that it wasn’t constructed well. I don’t remember what Nicholas did last week, but I think two people had to go because they started out the season with 17 designers.
