Maxi-dresses provide maximum beauty. You get the dramatic beauty of a gown, but in a far more wearable way. And what’s easier than wearing a dress? Plus, in San Francisco they’re quite practical for balmy spring/summer/fall/winter days (and the nights that inevitably turn chilly). I currently own one maxi-dress and love it. This A.L.C. dress that I’m cyber-stalking has a similar feel, but maxi-dresses come in all different styles.
No matter the style, a maxi-dress needs three things to be successful:
Length – If it’s not long it’s not a maxi dress; but you don’t want it to hover above your ankles or it will look like you’re ready for a flood.
Shape or Drape – It can’t sit on you. It has to fit to you or move with your body or else it can look like a potato sack. Maxi-dresses should be comfortable, so you don’t want to have to wear a belt to create shape.
A signifying detail – It can simply be a bright color, but it must have something interesting or else it veers towards potato sack.
– If you’re short, choose a dress that falls to the floor and that has an empire detail, to make your legs seem longer.
– If you’re tall you can choose a dress that doesn’t quite hit the ground, or that even hits mid-calf (tea-length). But again, nothing that hovers over your ankles.
– Wear open-toe shoes. You’re already covering so much of your body, closed-toe shoes can weigh the look down.
