Project Runway recap: Between FLOTUS and the Finale (ep. 10)

*I know it’s been a while since we discussed Project Runway – and the final episode is tomorrow – so I’m doing speed recaps of the past 5 episodes.*

Episode 10 – the print challenge is back! Using some nifty product placement the designers get to create their own print inspired by their past. I would actually considering subjecting myself to being on reality tv if someone promised me I could design my own print. But back to the show. When the designers get to their workstations they see photos of themselves from childhood at the ready and there’s a brief montage of the designers crowded around the workstations cooing at everyone’s childhood pictures.

In his camera confessional Mondo dropped a bomb: his print was representative of his HIV positive status. ! !!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When he revealed that I felt numb and then I started to cry. It was heartbreaking. It was clearly a struggle for him because everyone kept pestering him to explain his design and he refused. I don’t know when the interview was conducted, but obviously he was on his way to sharing his secret if he was willing for it to be shared on national tv at some point in the future. But this wasn’t the only tear-jerking moment. Tim comes in with a surprise – the mothers! And Chris Collins’ boyfriend, and Michael C’s son. There is not a dry eye among the designers as they embraced their mothers, and tears were forming in my eyes as well. Then the camera cut to Gretchen – the only one without a mother. She explains that her mother is the primary caretaker for a sick person and that she can rarely get away. So when she finally does appear a few moments later it’s that much sweeter.

On the runway Nina really wants to know the inspiration behind Mondo’s print. He refuses. But then – he catches the last moment of silence before the show is about to proceed, and in a voice wavering yet steady at the same time says, Nina? Then he opens up and tells everyone – Nina, Michael, Heidi, guest judge Rachel Roy, and all the designers – his secret.

Mondo wins for the third time in a row, Valerie is out.
