Project Runway recap: Hat Trick

*note: I realize I’m a week behind. Last week’s recap is forthcoming.

This week on Project Runway: Philip Treacy and his astounding hats!

Random observation: Tim has a couple of zits on his face. A) old people break out? B) the hair/make-up crew couldn’t cover that up? Where was Collier Strong and the L’Oreal Paris Make-up Room?

These hats are so creative and have such a presence I’m going to guess that whoever goes home will do so because their dress is underwhelming vis-à-vis the  hat. This seems to a challenge where you have to go big or go home.

Best lines:

“There are a million fabrics to choose from. They all have voices – I’m hearing them.” – Mondo (I love this line partly because that’s what I feel like when I go shopping. If an item doesn’t call out to me, I don’t want it).

“I don’t know what planet you came from.” – Christopher Collins, on Mondo

“A woman who could afford that hat could afford for the polka dots to line up on her dress.” – Tim Gunn, advising A.J. on his dress

On to the dresses (and hats!)

Peach; I loved the hat, but felt the dress was at best boring, and worst totally incongruous with the hat. Pink jacquard with extreme feathers?

A.J.; I thoroughly enjoyed both the dress and the hat.

Valerie; in the top 3, although I thought it was a complete snooze.

Michael D; in the top 3, I loved the silhouette and texture of this outfit, although I could do without the peacock feather in the back.

Michael C; the winner! Every other designer was hating on this outfit. Sure, it may have been technically simple, but it’s beautiful and I’m sure in person the golden effect was amplified.

Christopher; I loved the dress, hated the styling. The judges hated it too, and he landed in the bottom three. Ironically though, all the safe designers thought he was in the top.

Kristen; In nearly every other challenge I’ve loved her aesthetic, but this dress was sad and ugly. And it doesn’t at all feel like it corresponds with the hat. Kristen lost, and although I hated to see her go, I understand why the judges sent her home for this.

Who was your favorite? Do you think the right person got sent home?

I totally agree that the right person got sent home.

The only one I thought should have won was actually Michael D, but perhaps the glittery, flowy dress dazzled the judges
