Re-styling the January J.Crew

The other night I came home, drank some haterade, and looked at the January J. Crew catalog.

Their caption says “our toothpick zipper jean give everything else in your closet a little attitude.”

Really?  Realllly? This outfit says clutter and confusion to me. Lose the bauble necklace, keep the black beads. Lose the pretty bag and orthotic shoes and give her some studded accessories:

Now there’s some attitude I can believe in! Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to slick back her hair and do it up in a ponytail. Just sayin’.

I’m sorry, but no. No. I see the juxtaposition of corporate with comfy, but this does not work for me. Please try again.

same concept, much better execution.

I get where you’re going with this, J. Crew… I do. I too loved Ralph Lauren’s Spring ’09 sequins on safari. But don’t you think you might be interpreting them a bit too literally?

I know how much you like to look classic and collared, so for you I suggest the following (you can thank me later):

As for me, here’s how I prefer my glitter:

i didn’t think the shoes were orthotic, but what do i know…i’m wearing a pair of keen boots right now. the rest i agree with, although the ralph lauren sequins on safari is too much for me…and the jcrew version is toned down and i’m not totally put off by it. i do prefer your version of glitter to the others. 🙂
i’m glad someone else agrees with me on those bauble necklaces. less is more sometimes.

J Crew has been lifeless recently; both men’s and women’s. It’s gone in the past year from classic to classically drab. They need to take more chances with color.
